Through continuous innovation, collaboration, and commitment to excellence, we aim to redefine the boundaries of soil hydrology science, enabling a world where every drop of water is valued, every soil profile is optimized, and everyone lives in a sustainable ecosystem.

SoilMoisture Founding History

SoilMoisture Equipment Corp. was founded in 1955 by Mr. Percy Skaling, who was collaborating with renowned soil physics scientist Dr. L.A. Richards at the United States Salinity Lab, which is now affiliated with UC Riverside. Dr. Richards was a pioneer in modern soil physics and hydrology and played a key role in assisting Percy Skaling bringing new measurement instruments to the market in the field of soil physics, soil hydrology, and agronomy. These instruments have since become essential tools for soil physics laboratories world-wide.

SoilMoisure has developed a renowned line of products, including Tensiometers, Soil Moisture Retention Curve Systems, SoilMoisture Porous Ceramics, the Guelph Permeameter, the Trase TDR moisture sensor technology, Suction Cup Lysimeters, Plant Water Potential Consoles, Soil Water Samplers, and G-Blocks. These products have become widely recognized and are frequently referenced in soil hydrology and soil physics textbooks, as well as in regulatory documents, scientific publications, and professional standards. The soil water retention coefficients utilized by the US Department of Agriculture in the 1980s were established with the assistance of SoilMoisture’s high-quality ceramics and instruments. Currently, the USDA’s National Soil Labs continue to depend on SoilMoisture’s products for the advancement of the US National Soil Survey, which plays a vital role in supporting crop production across the country.

In 1980, Dr. G.C. Topp from the University of Toronto published the Topp Equation.  This equation served as the initial comprehensive soil moisture calibration for time domain reflectometry (TDR), which is widely used today in soil moisture measurements. Subsequently, Dr. Topp collaborated with SoilMoisture in the early 1980s to develop the first commercially available portable soil moisture sensor, which is now recognized as the Trase TDR. With a rich history spanning decades, SoilMoisture is a well-regarded brand within various industries including soil sciences, construction research, agriculture, agronomy, environmental sciences, geology, mining, and oil industry. SoilMoisture is a top choice for professionals in these fields, and is widely recognized as the leader in the global soil physics and soil hydrology markets.

Acquisition by Stevens

In October 2022, SoilMoisture Equipment Corp. was acquired from the Whitney Skaling family by Stevens Water Monitoring Systems, Inc. (Stevens) and Mr. Alan Farsad, PhD Soil Physics. Stevens brings their knowledge and technologies in environmental data acquisition, water resource and soil science monitoring to SoilMoisture’s soil physics and soil hydrology expertise in agronomy, TDR technology and scientific research measurements.
